Dr. George Kohout was born in Illinois and grew up in Southern California. He became interested in dentistry at a very young age. Unlike most children, he actually enjoyed visits to his pediatric dentist where he was able to closely observe the dentist anytime his sister needed treatment.
When the time came to choose a college, Dr. Kohout decided to pursue dentistry as a career and entered a pre-dental program. He moved to Stockton, California and attended University of the Pacific’s undergraduate campus. Dr. Kohout was accepted into an accelerated program which allowed qualified students to complete only two years of university study before entering dental school. In 2006, he moved to the Pacific Heights neighborhood of San Francisco and began attending University of the Pacific’s Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry. For most of his time in dental school, Dr. Kohout did not know that he wanted to specialize in endodontics. However, during winter break of his senior year, he was so interested in root canals that he read his endodontics textbook…for fun. Dr. Kohout graduated second in his class in 2009 and earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree along with induction into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon national dental honor society.
Despite plans to specialize in endodontics, Dr. Kohout thought it was important to further his training in general dentistry and entered a two year General Practice Residency at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in San Diego. During the second year of this program, he served as the chief resident and was able to focus on his interest in endodontics and restorative dentistry. Additional training at this institution included rotations in internal medicine, emergency medicine, and anesthesiology. In 2011, Dr. Kohout moved to Dallas and entered the graduate endodontics program at the Texas A&M Health Science Center Baylor College of Dentistry. His favorite parts of the program were being able to focus completely on root canal treatment and learn to use the most up to date technology and a variety of techniques. He graduated in 2014 with a certificate in endodontics and began practicing in the Dallas area.
As a self-proclaimed “endo nerd,” Dr. Kohout’s interest in root canals is not limited to business hours. He spends time each day reading and participating in online forums dedicated to root canal treatment. When he can actually stop thinking about work, Dr. Kohout enjoys road trips to different cities in Texas and camping in the state parks of East Texas. His favorite Texas road trip is a tie between Big Bend National Park and Caddo Lake. When in Dallas, his favorite places to spend time are White Rock Lake and the Katy Trail. As an avid reader, he can’t pass up a good deal at Half Price Books. Dr. Kohout also enjoys traveling to California to visit his family and the nearby mountains.
